The Stone in His Pocket

A Short Story About Healing Through Forgiveness
Inspired by Healing in Forgiveness – A Book by Gerald Crawford (2025)

Daniel carried a small stone in his pocket every day.

No one knew why. To others it seemed like an ordinary habit, but to Daniel the stone had meaning. Years earlier, a close friend had betrayed his trust in a way that left him deeply hurt. Although time had passed, Daniel still felt the sting of that experience. The stone became a reminder of the anger he carried inside.

Whenever he touched it, he remembered the words that had been said and the pain he had felt. The stone was smooth from years of being held, just as his resentment had become familiar and constant.

One evening, Daniel visited an elderly neighbor named Samuel, a quiet man known for his gentle wisdom. As they sat together, the stone slipped from Daniel’s pocket onto the floor.

Samuel picked it up and asked, “Why do you carry this?”

Daniel hesitated before answering. “It reminds me not to trust too easily.”

Samuel studied the stone and then said softly, “It looks heavy.”

“It’s just a small stone,” Daniel replied.

Samuel handed it back. “Carry it in your hand for the rest of the evening.”

Daniel did as he was told. After a while, his hand began to ache.

“It’s strange,” Daniel said. “It feels heavier than before.”

Samuel nodded. “That is what happens when we hold onto things too long.”

They sat quietly before Samuel spoke again.

“What would happen if you put the stone down?”

Daniel looked at it and realized something he had never seen clearly before. The stone was not protecting him. It was weighing him down.

Slowly, he stood up and placed the stone on the table.

For a moment he felt uncertain, as if he were losing something important. But then he noticed a surprising feeling — a quiet sense of relief.

In the days that followed, Daniel made a decision. Instead of replaying the past, he chose to forgive his friend — not because what happened was acceptable, but because he no longer wanted to carry the burden.

Over time, his thoughts became calmer. The memories lost their sharp edges. The tension he had lived with for years slowly faded.

One afternoon, while visiting Samuel again, Daniel smiled and said, “I stopped carrying the stone.”

Samuel smiled gently and replied, “And how does it feel?”

Daniel answered, “Lighter than I expected.”

Samuel nodded. “That is the gift of forgiveness.”

Moral of the Story

Resentment is a weight we carry — forgiveness is the moment we set it down.

Teaching

Forgiveness does not erase the past, but it releases the emotional burden we carry because of it. When we choose forgiveness, we choose healing, peace, and freedom from the weight of unresolved pain.

Background

Sarah (name changed), a 39-year-old mother and office administrator, had lived with long-standing feelings of hurt and disappointment caused by difficult family relationships. Although she tried to move on, she often found herself replaying past events in her mind, which left her feeling emotionally drained and unsettled.

She described feeling outwardly strong but inwardly tense, often experiencing a quiet emotional heaviness that affected her sense of calm. Sarah realized that unresolved resentment was interfering with her emotional well-being and her ability to enjoy the present moment. She became interested in forgiveness as a way to restore peace in her life.

Challenges

Before embracing forgiveness, Sarah experienced:

  • Persistent emotional tension

  • Recurring thoughts about past hurt

  • Difficulty letting go of disappointment

  • Feelings of bitterness at times

  • Trouble feeling fully relaxed

  • Emotional exhaustion

She explained her experience by saying:

“Even when life was going well, something inside me never felt fully at peace.”

The Forgiveness Journey

Sarah approached forgiveness gradually and gently, allowing herself time to work through her emotions.

1. Recognizing Emotional Pain

She began by acknowledging the emotional wounds she had been carrying for many years. This awareness helped her understand how strongly the past was influencing her present life.

2. Choosing Healing

Sarah made a conscious decision to pursue healing rather than continue holding onto resentment. She began to see forgiveness as something she was doing for her own peace.

3. Practicing Letting Go

Through quiet reflection and personal writing, she began releasing feelings of anger and disappointment. Instead of replaying past events, she practiced focusing on the present.

4. Developing a Forgiveness Mindset

Sarah began to adopt a new perspective toward forgiveness, seeing it as a daily attitude rather than a single act. She reminded herself regularly that peace was more valuable than resentment.

Results

After several months of practicing forgiveness, Sarah noticed significant changes:

  • A greater sense of calm

  • Less emotional reactivity

  • Improved patience

  • Reduced stress

  • Better emotional balance

  • More enjoyment of daily life

She described the change in simple terms:

“I feel quieter inside. The past no longer feels so heavy.”

Key Insight

Sarah discovered that forgiveness was not about changing other people but about transforming her own inner experience. As resentment decreased, her sense of calm increased.

Forgiveness became a foundation for a more peaceful and emotionally balanced life.

Feel the Healing Through Forgiveness with Hypnotherapy

Imagine any remaining resentment, anger, or hurt leaving your body as we do this session. See it being released, like autumn leaves drifting gently to the ground.

Here is a sample hypnotherapy script for “Healing Through Forgiveness”:

Induction

(Soft, calming music plays in the background)

“Welcome to this hypnotherapy session, where you’ll embark on a journey of healing and forgiveness. Find a comfortable seated or lying position, with your back supported. Take a deep breath in through your nose, and out through your mouth. Allow your body to relax, starting from your toes, up to the top of your head.

As you breathe in, imagine fresh, calming air filling your lungs. As you breathe out, imagine any tension, stress, or anxiety leaving your body. Take another deep breath in, and out, and allow yourself to settle deeper into relaxation.

Deepening

“Imagine yourself standing at the edge of a peaceful lake on a warm summer day. Feel the soft grass beneath your feet, and the gentle breeze on your skin. With each breath, allow your body to become more relaxed, more calm.

As you gaze out at the lake, notice the water’s surface. See the ripples and waves gently lapping against the shore. With each wave, imagine any remaining tension or stress being washed away, leaving you feeling more serene, more at peace.

Forgiveness Journey

“Now, imagine a person or situation that has been causing you pain, hurt, or resentment. This could be a past trauma, a relationship, or a personal experience. Allow this image to arise in your mind’s eye.

As you reflect on this experience, notice the emotions that arise. Allow yourself to feel these emotions, but also remind yourself that you are safe, and that you are in control.

Now, imagine that you are standing in front of this person or situation. See them standing before you, and notice their expression. It may be difficult to look at them, but try to maintain eye contact.

Forgiveness Statement

“As you gaze at this person or situation, repeat the following statement to yourself: ‘I choose to forgive [name/person/situation]. I release the pain, the hurt, and the resentment associated with this experience. I let go of the need to hold onto this burden, and I choose to heal.’

Allow these words to sink deeply into your mind and heart. As you repeat this statement, imagine a warm, white light beginning to emanate from your heart. This light represents forgiveness, compassion, and understanding.

Healing and Release

“As this light grows, imagine it enveloping the person or situation before you. See this light filling any wounds, any pain, or any hurt. Allow this light to heal and release any negative emotions associated with this experience.

As you exhale, imagine any remaining resentment, anger, or hurt leaving your body. See it being released, like autumn leaves drifting gently to the ground.

Self-Forgiveness

“Now, turn your attention to yourself. Have you been holding onto guilt, shame, or self-criticism related to this experience?

Allow yourself to acknowledge these feelings, and then repeat the following statement: ‘I forgive myself for [self-criticism/guilt/shame]. I release the need to hold onto self-blame, and I choose to heal.’

Imagine this warm, white light now filling your own heart, healing and releasing any self-criticism or negative self-talk.

Integration and Awakening

“As you continue to breathe deeply, imagine yourself integrating this newfound sense of forgiveness and compassion. See yourself moving forward, feeling lighter, freer, and more at peace.

When you are ready, slowly open your eyes. Take a deep breath in, and out, and notice how you feel. Allow this sense of forgiveness and healing to stay with you, guiding you in your daily life.”

Awakening

(Soft music continues to play)

“Take a deep breath in, and out. When you are ready, slowly open your eyes. Notice how you feel, and take a moment to journal or reflect on your experience.”

This script is a sample and may need to be adjusted based on individual needs and circumstances. It’s essential to work with a licensed hypnotherapist or healthcare professional to ensure a safe and effective experience.
